Lets Talk about Regulation and what really means, Regulation in media is where the government Regulates public media such as print, film, TV and radio this applies to Adult Themed content and scenes with Graphic content not suitable for younger viewers we've all heard these statements made by the announcer before a Tv show or a news article and then for film you have the BBFC which is a governing body who slap a age rating on a film.
So anyway what i think about Regulation, i think they try to regulate as much as they can however younger viewers still watch these programs or films regardless of how much they say "NO!" since technology is at our finger tips, most people don't put parental blocks on their internet or kids some know how figure out the password on the remote 'Clever little buggers aren't they' so since kids as young as 3 know how to work an Iphone or an Ipad most kids can go on Google and find Film sites, and watch these films so that brings me to a point should it really be the government who regulate what people are exposed to or should it be down to the parents.
Back when i was a child which was during the 90's just incase you didn't know, We never had the internet or if we did it was damn slow and annoying made funny noises when your tried to connect anyway we never had mobile phones either, so we had to try and catch movies live on TV so it was regulated by my parents it was like bed time around 7pm and you had no choice but to go to sleep unless you had a VHS player so you could sit up and watch a U Friendly film ofcourse, so it was regulated by my parents what i was exposed to as a child.
Now days it's a lot harder to regulate what a child is exposed to Violent video games,or films that everyone is talking about on the playground which i feel sorry for kids today it's sad that they don't have the mental stability to function without electronic devices that they lack imagination or are able to turn a stick into a gun or a sword or a magic wand which leaves you with limitless possibilities of play time, i guess parents are a lot less strict these days that's because most parents are still kids themselves these days and i believe they lack the mental maturity to be parents.
As a filmmaker regulating my content is always a tough one because my project could contain scenes of a graphic nature or adult themes, but Young people in the age range of 14-20 some of them can deal with the adult content and it doesn't effect them in terms of their social ability to distinguish the difference between fantasy and reality , other's have a hard time with that and we've all heard stories of a child who killed his friend because he was acting out a scene from a film or a Game but no one ever questions "where were the parents?" "How did they get access to a knife or an axe" these are things i wonder when i create an adult themed film or drama.
So in my opinion it's down to the parents to regulate what a child is exposed to at home and the Government to regulate the Age rating on Films in public (Not that it stops the parents buying the DVD for the child when it comes out) but who cares they are making a profit buy that parent buying that DVD whats the worse that could happen?
I leave you with that thought
